Anzar should've just shut his face about Eta and told the truth -- that as of that time they had no idea who committed the atrocity, but that it had the fingerprints of Al Qaeda more than Eta. His going after Eta immediately without any evidence smelled way too heavily of electioneering, and he paid dearly for it.

Perhaps the UN should officially endorse candidates running for election in member states. Annan seems to be getting close to that.

Let's see: The Spanish learned from the UN's exampe in Iraq on how to turn tail and run....and now Kofi Kups is lecturing?
To: Arkinsaw
Kofi's already talking with Kerry. Kerry mentioned it last December.
Background: Oil for Food Program.

Kofi may be looking for his own private spider hole in the near future. If the "oil for food programme" story makes it to the front pages, Kofi, Jacques, Vlad and the gang will be looking even more despicable than they did pre-Iraq war. There's a scandal bubbling beneath the surface; and it won't be grins and giggles for the Iraq war opponents when the truth is known.

These things only ever have the legs that the NYT gives them. I don't look for this in my morning paper anytime soon.

ya know, let's just save Spain the trouble.
Tell the spanish troops that they have 48hrs to move their troops to the airport to catch an AMERICAN C-5 home.
"You Spanish soldiers stood bravely in battle. You lost 15 fellow warriors in battle with the enemy. We are sad to see you go, but we understand that politicians sometime order military men to do bizarre things that are militarily insane. Please know that when you need us, we'll be beside you again - and we'll both take pleasure in killing the islaminazi enemy once again.
Salam. Farewell, God Bless. Goodbye."

Why take it out on the troops at all? And they deserve a "Vaya con Dios" or a simple "Adios" among the farewells.
To: VadeRetro
well, sometimes troops gotta suck it up (like being told to retreat during battle, ala Spainish troops) - but it would get coverage and a very overt demonstration of displeasure.
Agree on the simple Adios, but I might provide a big Payaya with some gulf shrimp on the tarmack.

... a very overt demonstration of displeasure. Pettiness wins no friends. I'd say to save the anger for where it goes, Al Qaeda and the Paz-niks.

"Washington also said it may seek a new UN resolution that could help persuade Mr Zapatero not to withdraw Spain's 1,300 troops."
Screw the spaniels. And send the screwing via a card with a Teddy Roosevelt stamp. Nothing's changed in Spain since 1898, apparently.
The Spanish people are every bit as cowardly as the French.

Hey Kofi.................be a good little boy and just shut the f*** up.

Considering the interesting state of affairs of your "Oil for Food" program, Kofi, it takes one to know one.
