I have a great respect for the American Indians, and I understand they were treated badly in the past. But in my opinion the problems they face today pertain more to their not fully assimilating into U.S. society than to anything that's happened to them in days gone by. In the long run it might be better for everyone involved to simply give each of them a lump sum payment in return for renouncing any further claims they may have based on old treaties, and let them become full U.S. citizens with neither more nor fewer rights or prerogatives than any other U.S. citizens.
