One student graduating from Evergreen on June 13 will not be present: peace activist Rachel Corrie will be awarded a posthumous degree. A senior at Evergreen, before her death Rachel had completed all but a few of the credits needed for graduation. Her teachers have certified the remaining credits. Born on April 10, 1979, Rachel died on March 16 of this year, crushed by an Israeli tank as she tried to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian doctor's home. Rachel's death is tragic--as are the deaths of the thousands of victims of the conflict between Israel and Palestine: most of them non-combatents, many of them children, elderly or handicapped. This conflict continues to escalate, as fear and desperation mount on all sides. We, Women in Black from several counties in Western Washington, join with the Palestinian and Israeli women who founded Women in Black, with the Coalition of Women for a Just Peace and with people of good will around the world in calling for peace and justice in Palestine. |
