So how did a man with mental illness get his hands on guns? Didn't congress pass a bunch of laws saying that was a no-no?

He must have lied on the form. Probably the only time that's ever happened in all history, since criminals always are very careful to obey bureaucratic requirements such as these.

You have to have a paper signed by a judge to verify medical mental illness. Being in an emergency care for a night doesnt legally constitute nutjobb-ness in order to purchase a gun.

The way it works, see, is, for the purposes of obtaining the guns, he was not definitionally mentally ill... but for the purposes of prosecution, he is definitionally mentally ill.

Isn't that a neat trick?
