[history]
March 17, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - An embarrassed U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan confirmed yesterday he has ordered a probe into allegations that top U.N. officials were getting payoffs from Saddam Hussein under the controversial Iraqi oil-for-food program before the war. At a press conference at U.N. headquarters yesterday in New York, Annan yielded to intense international pressure to address allegations of a gigantic swindle in which Saddam is said to have handed out more than $2 billion in sweetheart oil deals to U.N. diplomats and friendly politicians.

vouchers for the sale of more than 7 million barrels of Iraqi oil were steered to a Panamanian-registered company in which Sevan had a connection. Family members of former U.N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros Ghali are also officers of the company...
This is new information, at least to me.
This scandal will eventually have to be dealt with by Congress,
as the UN is partially funded by the US taxpayer.
It will be interesting and revealing to see how vigorously they pursue it.

Annan said the director of the U.N.'s Office of Oversight Services "has started the investigation to see how far he can go and what other measures need to be taken" - but added that further approval of the U.N. Security Council may be needed to launch a full-blown inquiry.I think France has already vetoed it...

Fox News is reporting that no other than Kofi's own boy and also the Number 2 man at the UN are involved with the bribery. Oh my, will the Hague here this case? I push for them to be arrested like two-bit crooks. This week is shaping up to be just fine.

I understand: the Iraq war was not only about wmds and Saddam's insanity, but also to undermine the socialistic-corrupt UN.... Bush is a genius.

Oh, but it was the draconian U.S. sanctions that killed the little Iraqi children.
Or not.
It was Kofi, Chirac, Schroeder, et al making money, Saddam making money, killing the children, blaming Bush.
And Kerry's throwing a hissy fit that that party had to end, that the mass graves and dead kids had to stop.
It looks more and more like Bush and Cheney are the only two non psychopathic world leaders.
