Yemen says arrests suspect in USS Cole bombing

SANAA, March 16 (Reuters) - Yemen has arrested a suspected militant wanted over the 2000 bomb attack that killed 17 sailors aboard the USS Cole in the port of Aden, an official Web site said on Tuesday.

Security forces arrested Ali Mohamed Omar Shorbajy in the mountainous Abyan region in south Yemen on Monday night, the Web site of the ruling General People's Congress said. A hunt is still on in the same area for three other wanted men. Last week eight men, including six suspects in the attack on the U.S. warship, surrendered to the authorities after a week-long siege of Islamic militants in Abyan.

During the operation security forces arrested local al Qaeda leader Abdul Raouf Nassib, who Yemeni officials say masterminded a 2003 jail break by al Qaeda suspects in the bombing of the ship.

Yemen, the ancestral homeland of Osama bin Laden, has been battling militants since the September 11, 2001, attacks on U.S. cities focused attention on the impoverished country at the tip of the Arabian peninsula.

"The United States State Department believes the "17 or so dead sailors" on the U.S.S. Cole "does not compare to the 100+ Palestinians who have died in recent weeks" in Mideast violence, a stunning government memo reveals.

The Clinton/Gore Administration disapproved a VOICE OF AMERICA broadcast condemning the attack on the Cole. A memo from the Executive Secretariat Staff at the State Department stated:

"The Department of State does not clear on the referenced VOA editorial.

"This editorial will reach an audience that is caught up in the violence in Israel and the Occupied Territories. The 17 or so dead sailors does not compare to the 100+ Palestinians who have died in recent weeks where we have remained silent. The people that hear this will not see the separation we are trying to make and relate it directly to the violence.

"Either VOA adds something in there to take the edge off and mention the Palestinians or we should kill this editorial until the violence has calmed for a while.

"S/CT [Secy. for counterterrorism] concurred with this. If you have questions concerning this editorial, please contact NEA/P (unintelligible)..."

I'm very happy to hear this.

The Cole was vulnerable for 3 reasons, it was a interdiction ship capturing oil smugglers from Iraq,

Yemen was an enemy port, but General Zinni had this incredibly stupid idea that our sailors are diplomats so sending them into the hands of the enemy is good diplomacy.

They were not allowed to defend themselves in port, no weapons were allowed on the quarterdeck. When the boat came at them, they could not respond because their firearms were locked up by orders of the Central command (diplomats don't need guns you know).

In other words, our foreign policy made the USS Cole a sitting duck. The bombing was an act of war perpetrated on sovereign US territory (a navy ship) and this fact was artfully dodged by the press and the government officials responsible for those dead sailors.
