I agree with you ... the piece wasn't very well done. One of the problems with the proliferation of media is that way too much writing goes out without any editing. Practically all the columnists have trouble with basic grammar elements; even Mark Steyn dangles a participle every now and then.
Equally important, as you mentioned, is the lack of analysis in the content. One of the great things about Free Republic is that a variety of people read what we write and challenge our thinking and expression. If I were writing something for publication, I'd want the FReeper mob to chew it up, first!

One of the first things I realized, way back when, when I first got online, is how really bad most people are at writing. I still expect more from someone who is, at least in theory, a semi-professional writer. Obviously, even that might be too much to expect any more ;)
