The NBC TV coverage said clean-cut looking John O'Neill was recruited to debate Kerry on the Dick Cavett show. O'Neill was shown at the White House being given an "attaboy" pep talk by President Nixon, with other aides present. Colson appears to have been the point man. The TV coverage showed excerpts of the O'Neill-Kerry "debate." O'Neill took issue with Kerry's charges of war crimes on the part of U.S. soldiers.
