Damascus Syrian Arab Republic radio in Arabic, official station of the Syrian Government, carries on 27 February 2004 at 1010 GMT a live sermon from Al-Uthman mosque in Damascus.
Dr Abdallah Rabih delivers the sermon, which he devotes to the new Hegira year, calling on Muslims to ponder its lessons that made early Muslims strong and dignified.
The imam calls on the vanguards of the Arab and Islamic world, especially thinkers, educationists, and writers to set the example for other Muslims by exhibiting Islamic values. He says: "President Bashar al-Asad reflects these values, ideals, and principles in his brave stands, wise speeches, and sincere calls for Arab and Islamic solidarity."
The imam devotes the second sermon to a general prayer for the prophets, the orthodox caliphs, and the prophet's family members and companions.
The imam concludes with a prayer to God to support Islam and Muslims. He prays to God to keep this and other Muslim countries safe and secure. He prays: "O God, deal with the criminal Zionists and those with them and behind them for they are within Your power. O God, scatter them, disperse their assemblies, lower their flags, destroy their economy, and make the cycles of evil turn around against them. O God, show us the miracle of Your power on them. O God, make them destroy themselves. O God, bring down your anger on them." He prays to God to protect Muslim countries from the plots of the greedy and malicious. He also prays for success for the president in his endeavors for the fulfillment of all aspirations.
