From what I gather IL has 9 Rat leaning districts and 9 GOP districts with one being a tossup

Ya, the districts are gerrymandered in favor of the GOP. So the Pubbies win their districts by rather narrow margins, or would in open districts, and the Dems wins theirs by mega margins mostly.

The Peoples Republic of Chicago is perhaps the largest socialist bastion in the nation, certainly the largest in the midwest. Every year, Crain's Business reports the 3 largest employers in Chicago: they are the City, Cook County and the State of Illinois. Jewel Foods is a distant fourth.
The Loop(Financial downtown district) is 70 % law firms.
The politics is one-party, and the school system is a total joke, having grown up and having lived there for 30+ years, the days of Chicago being a factory town (the city that works)is long gone.
Last year, the census bureau reported that over 250,000 whites left Cook County in the 1990s (I was one of them).
I can't speak for the rest of the State, but unless you're an ultra-lib making $100,000/year, Chicago will not be "your kinda a town". IMHO.

The map was a bi-partisan plan between Denny Hastert and RAT William Lipinski. IL was to lose a House seat. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley didn't want the Chicago House Districts to severely altered. As a result, the IL power players merged two Downstate districts together, IL-20 and IL-19: John Shimukus vs. David Phelps. Shimukus prevailed in 2002.

The population has been reduced enough where we've lost 1 electoral vote since 2000.
President Bush won every county in Illinois in 2000 except Cook.
Nader took about 2.2% of the vote. (give most of those now to Kerry if Nader isn't on the balllot)
One of the biggest hurdles right now is, the General Assembly still hasn't passed a law that gets President Bush on the ballot.(The RNC Convention is after the ballot due date)
IMHO, unless Kerry goes nutso, I don't think Illinois will go for Pres. Bush.

"President Bush won every county in Illinois in 2000 except Cook."
I dont think that is exactly right. Gore won probably St Claire and Rock Island maybe 2-3 more, but your point is well taken.
Sounds like Bush may not even be on the ballot in Illinois.

In the poll, Bush also lost ground on his handling of the war in Iraq and the nation's economy. This shows the power of the liberal media to deceive people.
Iraq is going much better with dropping American casualties, an interim constitution being signed, and the US economy is leading the western nations in recovery with a healthy growth in GDP and an unemployment rate at 5.6% which is lower than the 5.8% average during the Clinton years.
Bush is doing well on both Iraq and the economy.

Kerry should be run out of town in tar and feathers. Why are Americans supporting him?
As the moaschist said when asking why he submitted to abuse from a sadist: "Beats me!"
Many of the liberals support the Democrats because they simply ignore 9/11. They bought the lies told about Bush again and again on the Democrat campaign trail, about Iraq, etc. I dont think Kerry nor the Democrats care about terrorism. they are more concerned about hiking taxes than finding OBL.

I want to see Buch campaign to *win* in Illinois. I think he can do it. In fact, with his money, Bush should do a full-court press on several big states and leave Kerry scrambling. Then Bush can pick off more small states that kerry leaves underfunded. IOW, go after Illinois so Kerry is too busy there to protect the rest of the midwest.

"President Bush won every county in Illinois in 2000 except Cook."Then how do you explain all of those little blue globs on the county-by-county map, as shown in post #7?

They think this because he is a Democrat and the last time a Democrat was in office the economy was good.
The last poll I saw nationally regarding the economy said Bush was favored over Kerry by 48% to 41% which had switched from Kerry being ahead 45% to 42% the week before.

Mankiw may be right, but politically it's a dumb statement that leads people to trust the Mystery Democrat over Dubya on economics.
