In any given homicide scene, it will be a couple of hours before anyone is allowed to touch the bodies. So, if they were intertwined, it would be difficult to know for sure until they could be separated.

If they had any suspicion that just one of them was alive they would have yanked and tugged to get to the one person. Crime scene evidence wouldn't be a concern then.
