Gas Tanker Explosion Rocks Northeast Waco Neighborhood
Several Blocks of Residents Evacuated
Ryan Kelly

Around 10 o'clock Saturday night, an 18-wheeler tanker truck carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline was struck by a pickup near the intersection of Forrest Drive and Orchard Lane, causing the tanker to explode on impact.

Waco Fire crews tried to contain the blaze early, however several nearby homes caught fire within minutes. As fuel continued to keep the fire burning strong, the Waco Fire Department called for a voluntary evacuation of surrounding neighborhoods until the fire could be brought under control.

Fire crews from Bellmead, Robinson, and Woodway were called in for mutual aid support, along with assistance from the Waco Police Department and the Red Cross.

At least 3 people were sent to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. Two are reported to be in critical condition.

Clean up efforts are expected to continue well into Sunday morning.

Prayers for the injured in this accident. Also, how fast was the vehicle going to make the gasoline tanker explode? Would it take excessive speed or just a fender bender to cause an explosion?
