WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This week's deadly train bombings in Spain will not lead to a rise in the U.S. color-coded terror threat alert system, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman said Friday.

"Based on the current intelligence, we have no specific indicators that terrorist groups are considering such an attack in the U.S. in the near term," said department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse.

This seems to be quite strongly worded.

It's always a good idea to have labels on things that you put away in the pantry or freezer. You hate to pull something out from the back of the refrigerator and wonder, "What is this? And how long has it been back there?"

Police in St. Paul, Minn., this week have been digging out some gunpowder -- about a ton of it -- that somebody buried in caves dotting bluffs on the city's west side.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the gunpowder was discovered Monday afternoon by teenagers exploring one of the dozens of caves that have become popular places to party or probe. Reporter Heron Marquez Estrada said police responded to the site and quickly determined that this was a job for the bomb squad.

The bomb squad members spent most of Tuesday digging up "container after container" of the explosive powder, buried two feet down about 75 feet inside the cave. Officer Paul Schnell, spokesman for the police department, said that about 300 pounds of gunpowder was hauled away.

Then, as the workers were cleaning up to leave, they heard the chilling call from one of their comrades: "Hey, fellas! Look what I found over here!"

There, nearby, but buried just a little bit deeper, was a second batch amounting to as much as 1,700 pounds, sitting in deteriorating crates and tubes. Some of the stuff was just lying around loose.

"It turned out to be a bigger operation than anyone expected," Schnell said.

The crazy part is that no one seems to know how the gunpowder got there. It's a mystery. Schnell guessed that it probably was dumped there back in the 1950s when the U.S. military or somebody was trying to dispose of it. They stacked it in the back, buried it, and sealed the cave shut.

Want to be paranoid about something akin to Planet X showing up before November? Here's a snip which I received by email yesterday - a bit aged, but interesting nevertheless:

A member of our ham radio club intercepted this transmission and shared it with a few of us. He made a digital recording of it. The transmissions took place on 1-26-04 staring at 0:5:00 UTC. The frequency was 11.176 mhz, USB.

The conversation is between SNOWBALL NET and another station. We assume SNOWBALL is the network operator.

Here is a transcript:

Copies of this have been posted on several ham boards and have been sent to Popular Communications Magazine.

OK, so that by itself is curious, although the author may have been hoaxing (or breaking provisions of the Communications Act of 1933 rules about unauthorized disclosure of third-party traffic, but we'll assuming hoaxing, right? But now add a second data point to this, the odd story of British military cavers being trapped in Mexico reported at http://news.lycos.com/news/forms/printstory.asp?section=Science&storyId=840084



This British military in Mexico caves story has us wondering what the military guys are doing in caves? And who packs in that much provisions that 5-days under is no big deal? And what are those "military notebooks" they are shredding? Say what?



If one was truly paranoid, they would look at the combination of the two events and synthesize that "Hey, something is causing governments all over the world to act like they know something very bad is about to happen to the whole planet and they are looking for caves (or building underground bases) to be ready to survive whatever it is that is coming (in June).



Easy enough to write off as a wild "mind game" until we recall how close the rock Toutatis will be in September (remember that Earth is within the margin of error on Toutatis orbital projections) and then there's this one:

You don't know what a blink lab is? That's where NASA and other organizations take a picture of space, then take another picture of the same point in space a bit later. Whatever has moved (like a rogue planet or asteroid) can be readily seen by "blinking" between the two pictures...



No, we're not that paranoid about it, but we have been monitoring the Air Force 11.175 MHz USB frequency and wonder who the Burrow is...and no, it's not Barrow (as in Alaska).

This is beginning to feel like science fiction. Why would there be radioactive gasses in a cave, and even if that were par for the course, how would the UK know about it? AQ stored its nukes in the mexican cave. They were not maintained properly and leaked radiation.

3 Nuclear Workers Hospitalized After Odor Three Nuclear Workers in Washington Taken to Hospital After Noting Odor Near Radioactive Tanks

RICHLAND, Wash. March 25 — Three workers at the Hanford nuclear site were taken to a hospital Thursday after noticing a mysterious "sweet smell" near underground tanks holding radioactive waste.

The three initially declined medical evaluation, but co-workers called 911 when one of them developed a nosebleed, according to Erik Olds, spokesman for the Energy Department's Office of River Protection.

The worker with the nosebleed was taken by ambulance to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland. The other two also were being evaluated at the hospital, Olds said. Their conditions were not immediately known.

The workers are monitors for radioactivity or chemical vapors during the cleanup of the vast site that once made plutonium for nuclear weapons.

Several investigations are under way to determine if Hanford workers are being exposed to toxic vapors from 177 underground tanks, which hold about 53 million gallons of radioactive waste from weapons production.

Last week, six workers sought medical attention after being exposed to tank vapors. They later returned to work.

The Energy Department and the contractor handling tank waste cleanup have said the vapors are not dangerous.

For 40 years, the 586-square-mile site in south-central Washington made plutonium for the nation's nuclear weapons. Cleanup costs are expected to total $50 billion to $60 billion, with the work to be finished by 2035.

I don't know if it's been mentioned or not but March 25 - 28 is the 25th anniversary of the 1979 nuclear accident at the Three Mile Island .
