Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread 5
CNN ^ | March 12, 2004

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This week's deadly train bombings in Spain will not lead to a rise in the U.S. color-coded terror threat alert system, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman said Friday.

"Based on the current intelligence, we have no specific indicators that terrorist groups are considering such an attack in the U.S. in the near term," said department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse.

Explosives Are Stolen from Ski Area

By Steve Lipsher Article Published: Wednesday, March 24, 2004 Denver Post Mountain Bureau

A cache of powerful explosives used for avalanche control was stolen from the Winter Park ski area over the weekend, prompting a full-scale investigation by local and federal authorities.

Ski resort workers discovered an undisclosed number of "Trojan Boosters" - large cylinders packed with the explosive pentaerythritol tetranitrate - missing from a locked storage shed on the mountain Monday morning.

"It's a high explosive, but no detonators were stolen, and this substance does require a detonator," said Grand County Undersheriff Glen Trainor. "Obviously, if somebody doesn't have a detonator, it's pretty useless. But if they do, it could be pretty catastrophic."

Officials from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms joined the investigation Tuesday, seeking clues as to who stole the explosives and why.

"We're conducting interviews with people who had access to the shed, and then anybody else who might have possible information of any suspects," Trainor said. "At this time, we don't have any reason to suspect that it was a Winter Park employee."

Authorities do say they believe the break-in was a deliberate quest for explosives and not a juvenile prank, but they are not aware of any specific threats or groups that would want the explosives.

"It's fairly easy to manufacture and fairly powerful," Trainor said. "So it has been a tool used by terrorists in the past."

Resort spokesman Matt Sugar said officials have "taken preventative measures" to ensure that the remaining explosives are secure.

"We are certainly concerned about our employees and the ski area, and we have let our employees know what happened," he said.

Although only what is considered to be a small amount of explosives was stolen, authorities have contacted the joint terrorism task force for the region, Trainor said. Culprits likely would be charged with second-degree burglary, a felony, he said.

Authorities ask that anyone with information about the theft call 888-ATF-BOMB or Grand County Crimestoppers at 970-725-3226.

Selene, do you recall your post to me last week after a bag of explosives was found in the mountains of CO, you knew that it was a rugged area near NORAD, etc....Is this incident in the same general area?

Spaniards Held with Massive Explosives Haul

Wed., March 24

Police arrested two Spaniards in northern Portugal after 2,860 pounds of explosives were discovered in their van.

The two men, said to be aged between 30 and 50, were held yesterday near Guimaraes, 170 miles north of Lisbon.

Police, acting on an anonymous tip-off, stopped the Spanish-registered van in the suburbs of Guimaraes.

The men, from Spain’s northern Asturias region, were due to appear in court today.

They reportedly claimed they were delivering the explosives to Portuguese fireworks manufacturers.

However, they had no documents showing the provenance of the explosives nor any written authorisation for the transportation of explosives, news agency Lusa reported.

Work commitments will keep me away until late tonight/early tomorrow...look forward to checking back.

It would probably be best for all if we do not put very specific location information for some things here. Even with information that is rather public, the more likely certain tourists are to get lost and stop around to ask for directions, the better, maybe?

I must say first that I don't have a lot of knowledge about numerology, so will be talking here about impressions, rather than knowledge of using numbers.

9-11 - My first thought was that they like 9-11 as a victory day, so it wouldn't be changed.

But then 119 is a good number if you think of it as 1 -19, I think that 19 is "submission" or "Submit" so it isn't impossible that using "one submitted" might not have a meaning.

Early in the game, I picked up a code of "440" and for a long time used it in front of all word searches at google and got more muslim sites, than the same words without the 440, as I recall, we had a list of numbers and that one stuck in my mind ( I don't like '4's, hated being 44 so bad that I was twice, my husband knew that I didn't like the number and never told me that I was saying/thinking that I was 44 for a year before i was.)

I asked a friend from Indonesia if 4 had a special meaning to the muslims and she said that she had never known of one.

If you are to work with your math, backwards, it is 10-24-04
with the 4 leftover.

Or as written, 440 (old code) and without checking it, it may be the Atlanta area code.

And you have 4201 remaining.

Oh dear! I did a quick google for 4201, try it, muslims and also a Senate bill 4201 on Immigration, oh yes, fire again and computer language.

And I only glanced at 2 pages, didn't go to the sites.

If you read it as 4-4-04, there is still the 201, that is sure to be an area code, OK, I did a google for 201, now that is promising.

Then I did a google for:

1425 201

That is exciting, the first link is the phone number for a person named Ahmad in New Jersey, I did only a quick glance.

Using my old favorite, 440 in front of 201, was very interesting. Found chemical links.

My suggestion is to take the 1425, 440 and all the combinations of numbers that we have looked at and to do google searches.

CONGRADULATIONS, You found a site that might serve us well on the 'numbers' we try to figure out.........LOL See granny smile.

I did a google for:

4404201

and almost missed it, that is the latitude (I think that is the right word, it says Lat & Lon, I know what the meaning is.....) For the Post Office at Lincoln, New Hampshire.

But that is not the only search that is there, it also says
Airports and the World.......

So dig out those numbers and see where they lead to.

North Korean Dictator Meets With Chinese Diplomats

NewsMax.com Wires

Wednesday, March 24, 2004
SEOUL, South Korea – Reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong Il held a rare meeting Wednesday with China's foreign minister as the communist allies discussed the region's nuclear dispute in a visit Beijing described as a "very important contact."
Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, who arrived Tuesday, is the first foreign minister from Beijing to visit the North in five years. The visit is seen as bolstering the push for a third round of six-nation talks on the North's nuclear programs, as efforts to organize working level groups hang in limbo.

As Pyongyang's last major ally, China has taken on the role of host and coordinator of the meetings.

The Chinese diplomat and North Korean officials are expected to discuss a date for the crucial working group meetings, which will seek to nail down details before the next full round of six-nation talks, sometime before July, according to South Korea's Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon.

South Korea has accused the North of dragging its feet on the working groups.

Li's delegation toured a Pyongyang street market, laid flowers at a statue of national founder Kim Il Sung and met North Korean dignitaries in a "warm atmosphere," according to the North Korea's official KCNA news agency.

Li also met Kim Jong Il, who assumed control from his father after Kim Il Sung's death in 1994.

Li presented greetings from Chinese President Hu Jintao, KCNA reported. Before Li departed for Pyongyang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Kong Quan described the trip as a "very important contact between our two sides."

Earlier in the day in Seoul, South Korea's Foreign Minister Ban said North Korea would likely attend the next six-nation nuclear talks despite its recent rhetoric over U.S.-South Korean military exercises and the impeachment of South Korea's president.

A recent rupture in inter-Korean relations has fanned concern that the communist North might use the South's leadership upheaval or the joint war games as grounds for postponing nuclear negotiations.

The U.S. military describes the annual U.S.-South Korean war games, which began earlier this week, as defensive. But North Korea routinely criticizes them as preparation for an invasion.

The United States, two Koreas, China, Russia and Japan have agreed to convene a third round of talks on North Korea's nuclear program by July. A second round ended in Beijing last month without a major breakthrough. In the meantime, participants are trying to form a "working group" to nail down details.

Ban is scheduled to meet Li in Beijing next week.

The United States insists that the North dismantle its nuclear weapons programs completely and verifiably. North Korea says it will do so only if the United States provides economic aid and security guarantees.

North Korea, threatening on Friday to boost its nuclear arsenal in "quality and quantity," blamed the United States for the lack of progress in the nuclear talks.

Does this mean that the Gov has just installed another computer for the terrorists to 'hack'?

From the sound of it, we won't need an expert hacker, just go pull the plug to the power, it is unoccupied.......

This part of the update on NK stood out to me:

"Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, who arrived Tuesday, is the first foreign minister from Beijing to visit the North in five years."

Methinks they are talking about a bit more than the joint nuke talks.

For any freeper chessplayers- is this the equivalent of the knight's fork? I'm no expert on anything (except chocolate); it certainly seems to me that the chess pieces are being lined up in an offensive manner.

Wonderful that you are pleased with the lavender EO.

Next try Spearmint or Peppermint, both smell good and are good to sleep with, and good for pain and coughs.

I first wanted 4, then wanted more, but summer is coming, so I am on restriction, the refrigerator is full of lots of goodies and none of them are food.

A few days ago we were trying to get some clues of dates and times for AQ to attack. If I remember correctly, turmoil in Africa was mentioned. Just found this:

Arab leaders killed by Sudan insurgents

Khartoum, Sudan

24 March 2004 15:57

Six leaders of an Arab tribe have been killed in an attack by insurgents in western Sudan's South Darfur state, the governor, General Adam Hamid Mussa, said on Wednesday.

Mussa said a group of "armed outlaws" attacked Buram town on Monday night, killing six prominent leaders of the Habbaniyah tribe. Among the dead were the tribe's deputy chief, Omar Ali al-Ghali, and his brother Al-Ghali Ali al-Ghali, who is the head of the legal department in the state.

An unspecified number of people were also wounded and are now in hospital.

"The attack on Buram comes in the context of treason," a statement from the state government said, calling on all the people of the state to "join hands in the face of treachery and in defence their honour and their territory".

The attackers managed to escape, the statement said, adding that security had been restored.

A rebellion erupted a year ago in the states of North Darfur, West Darfur and South Darfur over allegations the government had neglected to develop the impoverished region neighbouring Chad.

United Nations coordinator Mukesh Kapila said this week the conflict in Darfur "is now the world's greatest humanitarian and human rights catastrophe" and is also "possibly the world's hottest war".

Kapila said the conflict, which has only recently begun to receive serious international attention, has killed more than 10 000 people and affected more than a million others. -- Sapa-AFP

More vitriol from NK:
North Korea predicts Hitler-like end for US neo-cons

(Reuters)

24 March 2004
SEOUL - US neo-conservatives are modern-day barbarians who are more “bellicose, cruel and ferocious” than Hitler and will meet the same end as the German dictator, North Korea said on Wednesday.

North Korea, locked in a dispute with the United States over its nuclear arms programmes, has recently stepped up anti-US propaganda in what diplomats said was one of its periodic campaigns to rally its people behind the communist state.

“Drawing close is the day neo-conservatism will be thrown into the dumping ground of history along with its defeat in the war on terrorism just as Hitler Fascism met destruction along with its defeat in the Second World War,” said the North’s official KCNA news agency.

The rambling KCNA commentary did not link its attack on American neo-conservatives to a specific issue. North Korea has long resented US President George W. Bush for labelling the country part of an “axis of evil” with Iran and pre-war Iraq.

KCNA said that the failure of the Bush administration conservatives to understand North Korea was a “tragedy” that would only bring about their downfall.

“Neither US imperialists’ logic of strength nor their strategy of peaceful transition will work on the DPRK as it is led by Kim Jong-il,” it said. DPRK stands for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the North’s official title.

“Neither US imperialists’ logic of strength nor their strategy of peaceful transition will work on the DPRK as it is led by Kim Jong-il,” it said. Sounds like fighting words to me. Of course, KNCA is invariably hostile toward the US.

Also, I recall one of those jihad posts mentioning using cadavers to sneak bombs in on cargo ships and planes.

Qantas terminal evacuated

March 24, 2004

A FREIGHT terminal at Melbourne airport has been evacuated after a suspicious chemical was detected on the outside of a coffin, police said today.

Police were called in after the chemical was found in a routine test about 1.45pm (AEDT), spokeswoman Jo Bishop said.

"Once that's happened they have swabbed an item and those tests have found a high level of suspect chemical compounds," she said. "As a precaution a Qantas freight terminal has been evacuated."

Ms Bishop said it was too early to say if the chemical was part of an explosive.

"This substance, while it's enough to activate an alarm, its use in this case might be completely innocent," she said.

Al qaeda aided by Pak intelligence: US analysts

Washington, Mar 22 (UNI)

Rouge elements within the Pakistani military and its intelligence establishment are aiding al Qaeda members evade capture and making a mockery of the media hype about the fresh military operations against leaders such as Osama bin Laden, US analysts have said.

''Certain elements within the Pakistani state and society are known to sympathise with the al Qaeda, and it is likely that certain rogue elements within the Pakistani military and intelligence establishment are helping al Qaeda members evade capture,'' said the analysts at the geopolitical intelligence firm Strategic Forecasting (Stratfor).

Following leaks out of Washington in February, the global media are rife with reports of renewed and vigorous efforts to nab senior al Qaeda leaders.

The latest operation by the Pakistani army gave rise to media speculations that al Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zwahri had been surrounded. However, those reports turned out to be baseless.

Despite US and Pakistani military activity along the northeastern border of Afghanistan, there has been no sign of Osama bin Laden or any of his top associates, Stratfor said.

''The generic explanations of why this has been the case cite difficult terrain and sympathetic natives -- particularly in the autonomous Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA) -- but we must consider the possibility that influential elements are helping the jihadists elude their would-be captors,'' it said.

With anti-Taliban and anti-al Qaeda forces controlling Kabul, Sratfor said, the only remaining suspects are within Islamabad's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) apparatus.

Contending that it had no doubt that the ISI leadership was firmly under President Pervez Musharraf's control thanks to certain personnel changes since September 11, 2001, Stratfor quoted sources close to Islamabad as saying that ''certain old-school individuals -- from colonels on down -- remain in a position to thwart anti-al Qaeda efforts.''

What an interesting find.

Makes sense, as the muslims, they would count every Jewish person.

Wonder if it will turn up in another article?

A quick google for:

shows promise of learning something.

Sorry for the jumping from topic to topic- but I just saw this on drudge:

By Associated Press

March 24, 2004, 3:18 PM EST

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Seabirds called murres are starving all over Alaska's south-central coast, and scientists say they don't know why.

Ailing seabirds are dropping onto Valdez streets and parking lots, floating into Whittier and washing up on Seward beaches.

"It's staggering," said Verena Gill, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist, who led a survey of Seward beaches that found 72 dead murres.

Throughout March, people have been calling wildlife agencies with murre sightings.

Biologists said the common murres are experiencing a major die-off. So far, Gill said, all the sightings add up to 1,000-2,000 dead or ill murres, and that would be a fraction of the total number.

Mass deaths happen periodically to murres, which look like little penguins, around the world.

The seabirds are not endangered, though. Perhaps 10 million murres live in Alaska waters, said John Piatt, a U.S. Geological Survey biologist who documented a 1993 die-off. In that instance, more than 100,000 birds died, Piatt said.

In 1998, a smaller die-off occurred, apparently confined to Cook Inlet, he said.

Common murres are about 17 inches tall, with dark brown coloring on their backs and heads and white bellies. They weigh 2.2 pounds when healthy. They waddle on land, but are phenomenal deepwater divers. Their primary food source is herring.

Scientists haven't figured out what is causing the starvation. It could be a combination of bad weather and scarcity of fish, Piatt said.

"The fish may move off or move deeper. They (the murres) are making a living out there in the open ocean all winter long," he said. "They have to feed pretty much every day."

The Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward has rescued 18 birds -- some just 60 percent of their average body weight -- and hopes to learn more about what's causing the deaths, said center rehabilitation technician Tim Lebling.

The Fish and Wildlife Service will also send some dead birds to a USGS lab in Madison, Wis., which investigates unusual die-offs. The Madison group will look for toxins, parasites and diseases, Gill said.
