Cool.
And weird.
I seem to remember an old 1960's national Geo mentioning a mummy of one kind or another.
I have it somewhere, but it is buried, packed preporatory to moving.
*UGH!*

I really enjoy your posts. They are always interesting, and a refreshing break from politics.

Maybe you're thinking of the Soviet Union flag.

I would guess that you now know what the Chinese are going to do with this. Curiosity and scholarship has won out fortunatly.

I think the jury is still out. They confiscated the DNA samples (of the mummies) taken by Victor Mair and his associates. Wouldn't it be appropriate if it turns out that their flag is based on something said by people from the west.

If they were not so insecure, they would place this in context and realise that the glory of their people was already set by the culture that gave rise to Confucius centries earlier. You take a look at how many semi-disparit cultures culture made up China versus the Han mania of today's communists and shake your head. They pour people into Tibet and overwhelm the Ughars -- all to their loss. They would not have such a fundamentalist problem in the west if not for their own actions. Rant over.

1 - "From the dried-up corpses found on the site, some anthropologists speculate that the Niya people were of Caucasian origin. Others say they were descendants of the soldiers of Alexander the Great (356-323 BC), who launched expeditions to the Orient, as the soldiers are said to have interbred with the local people."

There is quite a bit of evidence of the remainder of Alexander's armies and navies traveling east, particularly his navy. In fact, I remember some write ups years ago about evidence from India, China, even Indonesia and some other pacific islands.

Now that we have DNA figured out, many more difinitive studies might reveal some very interesting facts.

These caucasian folks have been in the Tarim Basin as early as 2000BC...and maybe earlier. I to have read some stories about Alexander's military folks. I think many may be true.
