If you think this is different from the US, you might want to try walking around downtown with your katana on your hip.
They may not have banned owning these implements in (most of) the US yet, but I guarantee you that carrying one around is frowned on.

Carrying firearms was banned in most states, but ownership was rarely banned. That left open the return of legal concealed carry in the future. Today concealed carry has been reintroduced in most states.
Once weapons have been outright banned and confiscated no one is going to ever get their rights or their weapons back.

A few years ago, I brought my old sword to have a master swordsmith look it over and appraise it. At a booth in a street-fair in San Francisco's Japantown. As I walked many blocks through the crowded streets I was very self-conscious of the sword hung over my shoulder (and felt very safe having it on me!). However, no one paid it much attention other than some curious smiles.
