Suspect arrested in I-580 shootings

By Lisa Fernandez

Mercury News

The California Highway Patrol arrested a 27-year-old Stockton man today and charged him with eight counts of attempted murder in one-day spate of shootings at cars traveling along Interstate 580 last month.

Christopher Charles Gafford was arrested at 6:30 a.m. at his home in Stockton. A black truck matching a description given by witnesses to the shootings was found at his home. Investigators will not say if any weapon was recovered, but that added they are still seeking other possible suspects or accomplices.

Little is known about a motive for the shootings on the freeway between Dublin and San Leandro on Feb. 23. No one was seriously injured during the sniper's attacks, but motorists have been wary about traveling the route while the gunman was at large.

Haven't seen any photos of the perp, but the article implied the sketch had much to do with fingering the suspect.

"Looks like a USMC version of Bill Clinton."

I don't know about a motive, but local news said that he was busted in Sept. for having a meth lab at his house.

Wait a minute here - he looks like a former Marine, you are a former Marine...

That means it looks like you have a meth lab in your garage, don't it?

I haven't blown my house into bite-size pieces of wood and stucco. That means that the answer is "no."

(Recalling a neighbor saying to me: "Get away from that garden hose, boy! You too klutzy to handle complicated machinery!" :o)

Well damn - that half a year I spent chasing a passing grade in "Logic and Critical Thinking" looks like so much wasted time right about now.

I suppose if you're not qualified to wield a garden hose the alternate "Clandestine dope farm in the basement" theory goes by the wayside as well - you really should think about taking a class and getting the license. Fortunately my neighbor is a State qualified garden hose instructor - I only have to pass a week long watering test every 6 months on his property* and then pony up my $100 and I'm fully qualified to, and I quote from my license, "Transport potentially harmful pressurized liquids from houshold faucets to remote locations via flexible tube" for another half a year.

* Which is concurrent with the Federal licensing tests for 'recieve mail' and 'pay bills' - his wife works for the Post Office and allows me to pay their bills in lieu of paying the license fees - how convenient is that? I did have a question about the pay per view movies on their satellite bill, but it turns out they're Federal Communications Commission content inspectors on the side and have to view foreign adult movies for compliance with US gov't decency standards, so I get the added benefit of doing my patriotic duty to (indirectly) help our government protect us from perverted Europeans!

Time to ban all guns capable of firing a bullet on a freeway.

These highway shooting, especially around Columbus OH, must stop. This will definitely stop them.

Light rail enthusiast.

LOL! Since the BART track goes right down the median of 580 and he could just as easily have hit one of their trains as a car, I don't think so.
