I don't know what (if anything) it means for one person to be a distant cousin of someone else. We're all distant cousins, one way or the other, and with the exception of those of us who spent the last 2,000 years in a hollow in West Virginia marrying our sisters, most of us can claim to be related to Caesar, Moses, Socrates, Homer and Alexander the Great. I mean each of us has two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents. The number of people we are theoretically descended from gets very big very fast. Go back a hundred generations and we're descended from 1.3 times 10 raised to the 30th power. The big question isn't who are we related to, but who not are we related to.
