Bee-Picayune staff - The Texas Rangers are investigating allegations of vote tampering in Live Oak County.
Ranger Oscar Rivera interviewed Precinct 3 county workers on Thursday at the courthouse in connection with the allegations.
Precinct 3 Commissioner Jimmy Strause, who was out of town that day, said he is aware of the investigation but could not comment.
However, he said, we always try not to do anything illegal.
Sheriff Larry Busby said Ranger Rivera was responding to a complaint by a citizen who alleged that Precinct 3 county workers paved private roads in exchange for votes, a felony offense.
Busby did not elaborate further other than to say he showed Ranger Rivera the roads in question.
Busby said his office generally does not investigate wrongdoings of county officials who set his departments budget.
Assistant District Attorney Martha Warner said Friday her office has not received a formal complaint.
She said a grand jury will convene on Thursday, March 11, and could subpoena county workers to testify if requested. However, she said, her office has not received that request.
A grand jury subpoena is one way of compelling people to testify, she explained. But she said she believes Ranger Rivera appears to have all the information he needs to complete his investigation.
Ranger Rivera could not be reached for comment.
