east of Interstate 15 That's the old Camp Elliott area. In the days when the navy was doing training at Miramar, that's where novice pilots who "lost it" used to punch out and the place was littered with wreckage.
In the early 70's, one of the guys bailed and his aircraft continued flying... right into the open door of a hanger. Big, ugly, mess.

When I was at Miramar (86-90) we had one go in over there. I remember being on the flight line and seeing a sudden billow of smoke. The first thought...I hope it wasn't one of ours. It was an A-4 from VF-126. I worked on F-16s for VF-126 & NFWS. It was maintenance error. The pilot got out and was back flying within weeks.
