IMHO, Kerry was building a political career, long before VN. Somebody pulled the right strings, Kerry got in the Navy with a commission, strings got pulled to get into action. When things got hot, strings pulled him out. Then when he felt he had accomplished what he wanted to do, strings pulled him out and into the fertile anti war Massachusetts environment.
