I think you missed the point of his statement. He wasn't challenging the service of swift operators, he was challenging Kerry's "witness" to the events he described in his testimony. Kerry spent four months in Vietnam on a boat where he saw ground action and villages predominantly from the shore and yet he personally "witnessed" every attrocity ever ascribed to the conflict.
