January 2001 Employment - 136.0 million
January 2004 Employment - 138.566 million
You left off an important stat:
January 2001 Labor Force = 141.9 million
January 2004 Labor Force = 146.8 million
So we have 2.5 million more jobs, but we have 5 million more workers.

The Feb., 2004 data are available.
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm
THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION: JANUARY 2004 Civilian labor force Employment 138,566
THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION: FEBRUARY 2004 Civilian labor force Employment 138,301
Shows a loss of 265,000 jobs since Jan., 2004 (last month)
Neither survey counts employment accurately. I believe that the establishment (payroll) survey showed a gain of over 100,000 jobs if I remember the news items correctly.
Why were 265,000 jobs "lost?" Probably because the Census population estimate decreased.
