Because they believe they can get away with it.

That's not an answer. I'm still wondering WHY anyone (Pubbie or 'Rat) would want illegal aliens to have driver's licenses.

We all know that relatively few will rush down to apply ("Let's see - I'm here illegally and subject to arrest at any time, so the thing to do is go into a state agency and announce myself as such." Yeah, right).

Is the intent to "document" the undocumented alien for security reasons? Is it simply to collect license fees and/or registration fees on their cars? Is it a back door voter registration? What's the REAL reason?

Don't worry, they wouldn't be arrested. Even if it required each DMV office to be declared a Sanctuary Zone, nothing would happen to any illegal who went to get a license. See the "Illegal Aliens Freedom Ride." How many of those self-admitted illegal aliens were arrested?

"Is the intent to "document" the undocumented alien for security reasons? Is it simply to collect license fees and/or registration fees on their cars? Is it a back door voter registration? What's the REAL reason?"

Gil Cedillo (sponsor of these bills) keeps saying "It's for public safety!" Others parrot that comment.

However, in other statements he's said we should give them licenses because "they were here first." He's also said that he wants to prevent illegals from having their cars impounded.

Personally, I think part of the reason is because he's a Mexican separatist idealogue.

However, for him and others the main reason would seem to be documenting the "undocumented." With their driver's licenses they can get other documents and blend in; few will be able to tell them from a citizen once they have a license.

There's also the issue of MotorVoter. When you go to get your driver's license at the DMV you can register to vote. If Gil Cedillo got you a driver's license, you'd probably vote for him, no?

In any case, the Big Lie is this is for "public safety." It's really for ideology and votes.

I don't know that. I work with the Border Patrol, and they were telling me that they saw a sharp spike in crossings after SB60 became law (and another after GWB declared his new scheme that none dare call amnesty). There were pro-illegal organizations teaching classes on how to apply. I think quite a few will apply. And when nothing happens to them, many of the rest will flood into the DMV soon after.

What we ought to do is to talk about how this is a trap that the INS is just waiting to spring on them once they have their addresses and thumbprints.
