Despite all the sanctimonious hand wringing, I have always been of the opinion that, in the main, negative campaigning works in the sense that there is always a significant portion of the electorate that can, in a sense, be influenced more to vote against a particular candidate as opposed to voting for his opponent.

Got it! I don't pick up on things well first thing in the morning... or perhaps your "nuance" was too subtle for me :) You are absolutely right, though. I also have been noticing how the media reports that President Bush "attacks" Kerry while Kerry "criticizes" President Bush.
