A big part of why we even have a justice system is deterrence. If people see that even the "rich and powerful" will be hung for doing X, they are much less likely to do X themselves.
What I got out of this is never say anything to the government. If they ask when you left your last job and you say Jan 5,2001 and later remember it was Jan 6,2001, it's too late. You just lied to a federale and it's off to prison to get raped.

MS went through two defense teams, the first she fired, presumably because they wanted her to accept the deal, and she refused. Too bad she didn't listen to their advice.
