..........makes me wonder whether they're trying to shore up the base. I know they've confused the hell out of me with such scintillating, Conservative firebrands as Lott, Hastert the last few years. You could have a point there. It could also be a little of both but knowing Rep. DeLay as I do I also know he has been longing to start pulling the party back from the brink for the past couple of years. IMHO his leadership and direction in conservative matters is sorely needed and long overdue after having to stomach what has been coming out of the mainstream Republican party for the past year or so.

If Dubyuh's on his toes, he oughtta make nice with the House Republicans so as to reinvigorate the support of his fiscally-conservative RightWing. They may never agree on everything (i.e. Amnesty fer Illegals), but I'm sure they can find some mutually-beneficial common ground.

IMHO,DeLay is the guy we need to get behind for 2008.That is not credible when DeLay opposes the Defense of Marriage Constitutional Amendment. 99% of everybody here understands that we need to break the POLITICAL back of the pro-gay marriage movement. Not just the legal. By making this an electoral referendum, we force these guys out from their cover, and give us the best chance in some time to do some political & maybe even judicial house-cleaning. Can anyone say "judicial impeachment"?
If we don't get the Amendment going now, then we are looking at a political fait accompli' being created by the otherside, just as with abortion. DeLay appears to be showing his true colors on this issue. And they are not conservative.

The last time I looked at the polling numbers the majority of American people were
generally opposed to amending the Constitution for this. As a Christian I must admit I'm not all that sure that an amendment will help all that much.
Personally I think what might work better would be to come up with a way to curtail the federal judiciaries ability to make law from the bench instead of interpreting law on these kind of issues. The growing list of activist judges need their wings clipped and soon.
Don't ask ME how that would go about getting done but I have read enough to know that it supposedly can be done. Amending the Constitution is a fix for only one problem, whereas curtailing the activist judiciary would go a lot further and do a lot more to remedy many of our nations ills that these activist judges foist upon us.

There are many State supreme court justices are also just as rotten, e.g., Massachussetts, Florida (can anyone say Election 2000?) and here in Minnesota (making state-funding of Abortion mandatory in direct defiance of the state law as one example)
