Ayo Handy-Kendi, Founder
Ayo Handy Kendi is the Founder/Director of the African American Holiday Association (AAHA), but as a storyteller and cultural presenter, she is lovingly called "Mama Ayo". Since 1989 she has delighted young and old as the Kwanzaa Griot. A "Griot" (pronounced Gree o) offers storytelling in the oral tradition of Motherland Africa that are culturally based, filled with values, life's lessons and history. As the Kwanzaa Griot, one story-performance tells the origin and "how to" celebrate the African-American cultural holiday, Kwanzaa. Other story favorites show the nature of greed in "The Talking Drum" or use Negro spirituals in "Juneteenth - Freedom Day Songs". Call AAHA's Education Department today to schedule The Kwanzaa Griot for your gatherings year-round. Also ask for AAHA's Holiday and Celebration Consultations, Technical Assistance and Facilitations.
