The simple fact is sadism was always near the edge within the teams and was also not really tolerated because those who cross that line can get their teammates killed. There is a line between being a hardass and being a sadist and those who crossed that line were encouraged to volunteer out. The stories about the dogs are the same ones I heard and I further heard some things about not standing up for the men on his team.

When it comes to the teams everyone so relies on everyone else that anything crossing the line is going to endanger people's lives on the team and that is a very serious matter. Now being tied to a stake in the sun while naked on one's birthday while the mosquittos feast is merely camraderie.
