Just talked to my daughter in BWI, they had a few strong tstorms in the area when the boat went under..
I got caught in a thunderstorm about 5 miles from there some 15 years ago, and nearly got washed off the flybridge of my boat, a 48' Viking Sportfish, which is made for heavy sea conditions. Even though I was only doing about 5 MPH, the bow buried after cresting each wave and scooped up more water than I'd ever seen up over the flybridge. I've never seen anything like it since, even during Baltimore Canyon runs out in the Atlantic, during bad weather.
When the wind and tide is just right, even the fringes of the Chesapeake Bay can be deadly.
