...and I believe you are talking about UW (Seattle), not WSU (Pullman).

Naming the new brick-covered area caused heated debate among students and administrators.

Red Square was named by a former Daily Editor-in-Chief and ASUW President. Many suggestions appeared in The Daily's letters to the editor, but over time "Red Square" became the area's unofficial name.
