Excellent finds!

BTW, Rita claims to be the founder of Peaceful Tomorrows.

Has anyone "exploited" 9/11 more than she has? She's tried to make a career out of it. As have her hate-America-first pals.

The irony is that so many of these people had relatives working in the Pentagon. You can bet they'd appreciate this.

But it's nice to see Teresa putting the Heinz money to good use! (You know Rita isn't paying for any of these trips.)

Give her a call:

Rita Lasar, 212-253-7651

She is planning on protesting the RNC convention in NY.

"The unifying theme about the Republican convention next year is keep your hands off ground zero," said Rita Lasar, a founder of September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, a group of about 80 relatives of attack victims. "Do not make a political football out of this. This is a place where very close, dear relatives died. It's not the backdrop for a political campaign."

From:

We are going to be seeing a lot more of her.

You can bet she is a Kerry supporter. Two peas in a pod.

I wonder how her pals the Taliban would have handled her?

September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows

Family members of people killed on September 11 gathered in New York on February 14 to announce the founding of a new organization, September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. They plan to work together to promote effective, nonviolent ways to counter terrorism and to advocate for an open discussion about peaceful and just responses. "We chose Valentine's Day to launch Peaceful Tomorrows because our families have been comforted by the love, compassion, and sympathy of people all over the world," said Colleen Kelly who lost her brother William Kelly Jr. at the World Trade Center. "It is this spirit of healing and understanding that we want to bring to the world in memory of our lost loved ones."

Members of the organization include a delegation of family members who recently returned from a trip to Afghanistan to highlight the plight of those innocent families affected by the US bombing campaign, family members who led a walk for healing and peace from the Pentagon to the World Trade Center in November, as well as other families who have spoken with concern about the US response to the September 11 tragedies. Peaceful Tomorrows members have asked that violent responses, such as the US bombing campaign in Afghanistan, not be done in their names or the names of their loved ones.

"We believe that the American people have been denied a dialogue on appropriate responses to the events of September 11," said David Potorti, East Coast Co-Director of Peaceful Tomorrows, who lost his brother at the World Trade Center. "Our single-minded rush to war has been made without thoughtful consideration of long-term consequences for our safety, security, and freedom. We will use our voices to promote a discussion about better solutions, ones based on justice, not vengeance."

One of the first projects the group is undertaking is the Afghan Sister Families Campaign to help families in Afghanistan suffering from the effects of the US military campaign. Kelly Campbell, sister-in-law of Craig Amundson who died in the Pentagon, and West coast co-director of the group, was one of those who made the trip to Afghanistan: "We met many Afghan families who lost loved ones due to the US bombing because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, just like our loved ones were on September 11. These families are suffering just as we are yet many of them are also struggling to feed their children, let alone rebuild their homes. Helping these innocent victims of our government's action is simply the right thing to do."

The group is asking the US government to conduct a study of civilian casualties in Afghanistan, and to provide compensation to affected families. "We are delivering a valentine to President Bush today, asking him to help us set up a fund for the innocent Afghan victims," said Phyllis Rodriguez, who lost her son Greg Rodriguez at the World Trade Center. "By helping others who are suffering from the effects of violence and war, we honor the memory of our lost loved ones in a positive way."

Peaceful Tomorrows members will speak at public events, join with like-minded organizations working for peace and justice, and endorse policies to promote peace and understanding throughout the world. The group invites other families and friends of those lost on September 11 and supporters of their message to join Peaceful Tomorrows. To learn more, visit on the web at www.peacefultomorrows.org

Contact: Kelly Campbell, 415-518-1991 (cell) or Rita Lasar, 212-253-7651

http://www.afsc.org/pwork/0203/020324.htm>p> Note that Kelly Campbell is the *sister-in-law* of Craig Amundsen, whose brother also went on the trip. And remember that Amundsen worked at the PENTAGON.

These people are shameless opportunists who saw a way to promote their America-hating agendas on the tragedy of people who would never agree with what they are doing!

Action Alert - Compassion for All: Urge your elected representatives to support an Afghan Victims Fund.
(March 7, 2002)

Call and Fax your Elected Representatives!
Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121

Call and Fax President Bush
Switchboard: (202) 456-1414
Fax: (202) 456-2461

Over 25 members of Congress have expressed their sympathy and support for the idea of a compensation fund when Peaceful Tomorrows members met with them in late January. Now they need to hear from you!

*Let’s also give Congresswoman Carrie Meek (D-FL) a little positive reinforcement for agreeing to sponsor legislation to create a compensation fund. Please call her office at (202) 225-4506 and thank her for her support.

-----------

Background:

March 7 marks five months since beginning of US military action in Afghanistan. Yet there is no official acknowledgment that innocent Afghan civilians have been killed or maimed in this “precision bombing” campaign. While the number of civilian casualties is unclear, estimates range from 1,000 to 4,000 people.

The innocent victims in Afghanistan who lost their lives during the U.S. air strikes deserve compassion and support similar to that which was rightfully shown to the U.S. victims of September 11. Out of our concern for our Afghan "sister families," four Peaceful Tomorrows members traveled to Afghanistan in January with Global Exchange visiting dozens of grieving and devastated Afghan families. We returned determined to help the Afghan victims.
Many of the families of those who died in the bombing raids are living in dire economic straits. People whose homes were leveled sleep in makeshift tents made of scraps of material. Orphaned children are crowded in with overburdened relatives. New widows, desperate to feed their children, are reduced to begging. The hospitals are overcrowded, understaffed and have few medicines. People with serious mental anguish go untreated, as there are only eight psychiatrists in a country of over 20 million.

We are calling on the US government to conduct a detailed study of civilian casualties and then create a fund to compensate the families. Afghan relief organizations suggest an average grant of $10,000 to rebuild homes, restock possessions, secure adequate medical and psychological care, or compensate for the loss of breadwinners and caretakers. Assuming 2,000 families seek compensation, this would amount to a meager $20 million. Twenty million is less than one day’s military expense during the bombing campaign, which cost $30 million a day.

While we pressure the US government to do a study and create a fund, we are starting this critical work ourselves. Peaceful Tomorrows and Global Exchange, together with Afghan groups, are doing a survey of civilian casualties and providing immediate help to desperately poor people who were mistakenly hurt during the US military campaign. Please join us. We must let Afghans know that we care about their well-being and how sorry we are for their losses. It is through such commitments that we will build the foundation for a more secure and peaceful world.

Here is what you can do to help:

1. Call and write to your elected representative (sample letter below) and urge them to support the creation of a compensation fund for Afghan victims. The Capitol switchboard is (202) 224-3121.

2. Donate to the grassroots fund that we have created for Afghan victims while we advocate for a governmental fund. Checks can be made out to “FOR/Peaceful Tomorrows." In the memo, indicate "Afghan Fund." (Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) is the fiscal sponsor of Peaceful Tomorrows.)

For more information, contact Kelly Campbell at Peaceful Tomorrows, 415-518-1991, kelly@peacefultomorrows.org

SAMPLE LETTER:

Dear Elected Official,

I am writing today to ask that you support the creation of a compensation fund to help the Afghan civilians who lost close family members or were injured during US air strikes.

The victims of the September 11 tragedy have rightfully received a tremendous outpouring of compassion from the world community and help from the US government and humanitarian agencies to ease their burdens. But what about the innocent victims in Afghanistan who lost their lives during the US air strikes? Aren't they also deserving of similar compassion and support? Shouldn't our hearts and helping hands go out those people who were every bit as innocent as the victims of the September 11 attack?

Reports from Afghanistan show that many of the families of those who died in the bombing raids are living in dire economic straits. Those whose homes were leveled sleep in makeshift tents made of scraps of material.

The number of bombing casualties in Afghanistan is unclear, but two studies of civilian casualties put the number at between 1,000 and 4,000 people. The studies were conducted by the Project on Defense Alternatives and by University of New Hampshire Economics Professor Marc Herold. Human rights groups such as Human Rights Watch have called on the U.S. government to provide information on civilian casualties. I urge the government to do a study of how many civilians were killed and injured; the circumstances that led to these casualties; how such casualties can be avoided in the future; and how much money is needed to effectively aid the victims.

The United States Government should then create a fund to compensate the families of those civilians accidentally killed by the bombing. Afghan relief organizations suggest an average grant of $10,000 to rebuild homes, restock possessions, secure adequate medical and psychological care, or compensate for the loss of breadwinners and caretakers. Assuming 2,000 families seek compensation, this would amount to a meager $20 million. Twenty million is less than one day’s military expense during the bombing campaign.

Assisting the Afghan people who have been victimized is not just morally right--it is also strategically wise. We must let Afghans know that we care about their well being by offering them compassion and support similar to what we are giving to those here. It is through such commitments that we will build the foundation for a more secure and peaceful world.

Thank you for your attention. I look forward to your response on this important matter.

Sincerely,

____________

Is it just me, or does it seem that if Craig Amundson hadn't gotten killed in the Pentagon this group would have never come about. How many relatives did he have anyway?

"Amber and Ryan Amundson, the wife and brother of Craig Amundson who
was killed at the Pentagon on September 11 fulfilled their pledge to
help create an organization of family members of 9-11 victims who
seek peaceful and just responses, not war, as the U.S. response to
the criminal attacks of September 11.

"September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows" formally
announced their existence yesterday (2/14/02). Following is their
press release, which includes their home page address. Please read
it and pass it along.

9/11 FAMILIES UNITE TO LAUNCH "PEACEFUL TOMORROWS"
Group Sends Valentine to President Bush asking for an Afghan Victims Fund
NEW YORK- Family members of people killed on September 11 gathered in
New York today to announce the founding of a new organization,
September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. The founding
members, including family of those killed at the World Trade Center,
the Pentagon and the flight 93 crash in Pennsylvania, announced plans
to work together to promote effective, non-violent ways to counter
terrorism and to advocate for an open discussion about peaceful and
just responses to the September 11 tragedies that took the lives of
their loved ones.

"We chose Valentine's day to launch Peaceful Tomorrows because our
families have been comforted by the love, compassion and sympathy of
people all over the world," said Colleen Kelly who lost her brother
William Kelly Jr. at the World Trade Center. "It is this spirit of
healing and understanding that we want to bring to the world in
memory of our lost loved ones."
Members of the organization include a delegation of family members
who recently returned from a trip to Afghanistan to highlight the
plight of those innocent families affected by the US bombing
campaign, family members who led a walk for healing and peace from
the Pentagon to the World Trade Center in November, as well as other
families who have spoken with concern about the US response to the
September 11 tragedies.
Peaceful Tomorrows members have asked that violent responses to the
September 11 tragedies, such as the US bombing campaign in
Afghanistan, not be done in their names and the names of their loved
ones. Members say they were concerned about the lack of discussion
about options to respond to the events of September 11.
"We believe that the American people have been denied a dialogue on
appropriate responses to the events of September 11," said David
Potorti, East Coast Co-Director of Peaceful Tomorrows, who lost his
brother at the World Trade Center. "Our single-minded rush to war has
been made without thoughtful consideration of long-term consequences
for our safety, security, and freedom. We will use our voices to
promote a discussion about better solutions, ones based on justice,
not vengeance."
One of the first projects the group is undertaking is the Afghan
Sister Families Campaign to help families in Afghanistan suffering
from the effects of the US military campaign. Kelly Campbell,
sister-in-law of Craig Amundson who died in the Pentagon, and West
coast co-director of the group was one of those who made the trip to
Afghanistan. She explains: "We met many Afghan families who lost
loved ones due to the US bombing because they happened to be in the
wrong place at the wrong time, just like our loved ones were on
September 11. These families are suffering just as we are yet many of
them are also struggling to feed their children, let alone rebuild
their homes.
Helping these innocent victims of our government's action is simply
the right thing to do." The group is asking the US government to
conduct a study of civilian casualties in Afghanistan, and to provide
compensation to affected families. "We are delivering a valentine to
President Bush today, asking him to help us set up a fund for the
innocent Afghan victims, "said Phyllis Rodriguez, who lost her son
Greg Rodriguez at the World Trade Center, as she held up a letter
signed by Peaceful Tomorrows members asking for a meeting with
President Bush to discuss an Afghan victims fund. "By helping others
who are suffering from the effects of violence and war, we honor the
memory of our lost loved ones in a positive way."
Peaceful Tomorrows members will speak at public events, join with
like-minded organizations working for peace and justice and endorse
policies to promote peace and understanding throughout the world. The
group invites other families and friends of those lost on September
11 and supporters of their message to join Peaceful Tomorrows. To
