With its laborious build-up to its orgasmic spurtings of blood and other bodily fluids, the film is constructed like nothing so much as a porn movie

Is Rich gay? I've seen a similar attitude before; in an article in the Boston Globe during the height of the priest scandal, a gay "Catholic" talking about (among other things) the homoerotic aspects of a crucifix. It floored me at the time (and gave me the creeps), but things in this article reminded me of it.

Andrew Sullivan (gay) used the terms "pornographic" and "sado-masochism" in describing the film. I forget the names, but I've seen the same stuff from one or two other gay writers. The only straight writer I've seen the same thing from is Christopher Hitchens, a rabid leftist on most issues.

I agree-- I find it very, very creepy. Just proves that what you get out of the movie depends very much on what you take into it.

You asked if Rich is gay....I asked that myself....he sure ACTS gay. I think he's married, but she could be a beard. He was the Broadway critic for many years....maybe he saw one too many musicals!
