Good review; thanks. But I have a point of disagreement:
No one comes off looking "good" - except Jesus.
Simon of Cyrene: starts out balking and loud -- but by the end of the ascent it seemed to me he was carrying the cross, and Jesus, out of love.
The woman with the cup. (Veronica?)

Luke wrote that Jesus reveals Himself in the breaking of the bread.Exactly.
The Passion Of The Christ shows that Bread being broken.
Go see this movie.

FWIW I have not seen the movie yet. I do have a non Christian neighbor who saw it and has asked me a number of questions about Christianity and the crucifixion since seeing it. Questions that indicated a degree of positive curiosity about what Christianity is about.

Go see this movie, but don't plan on talking, eating or doing anything else for quite a while afterwards.
You simply won't have the desire. Just muted conversation will seem somehow obscene and too much to bear.

I agree with this article, and I'd like to add a bit of insight.
I was having a conversation with my mother about this, and the violence issue came up; why so violent, when it's not mentioned so graphically in scripture, or tradition.
Because THEY knew.
The writers of the Gospels lived with this day in and day out. They were under the Roman boot; they KNEW. He was scourged; they knew what that entailed. Crucified; a ghastly picture to us, but they had seen it first hand, likely many times.
Indeed, in many cases as the Gospels and Epistles were being completed, the Priest and the Romans were having an open season on this odd little jewish sect called 'Christians.' Peter was crucified. Andrew was crucified. Stephen was stoned.
They didn't have to describe the violence, any more than we feel it necessary to describe a paved road. It was a fact of life. The mention of it would bring to mind the image of it.
Fast forward 2000 years. We've forgotten, many of us, just how ghastly this episode was. And we NEED to remember. We need the shame of the flight and denial of the apostles, the horror of the scourging at the pillar and the crucifixion. We need them to bring into even sharper focus the courage, the will, the LOVE of God.
It's easy to say, 'love thy neighbor, bless those that curse you.' HE did it. And the horror of the situation only makes glory of the Son of God shine that much brighter.
IMHO, of course.
