March 4, 2004 -- The mayor of New Paltz pleaded not guilty last night to hitching gay couples who don't have marriage licenses - and he vowed not to stop. "The issue before us today is one of civil rights. It's one of human rights. It's one of basic human decency," Jason West said shortly after his arraignment in New Paltz Village Court.

He's quite simply breaking the law. It's anarchy. He should go to jail for breaking the law and then flouting it.
Deliberate and joyful breaking of the law by an elected official undermines everything for which this country is supposed to stand.

So he pleads not guilty but vows to continue breaking the law. How liberal of him.

(s)Marriage is an act of making public what's already written in two peoples' hearts," West said.
I was just saying that to my five wives.(/s)

Outside the courthouse, demonstrators played "We Shall Overcome" while someone dressed in an otter suit pranced about nearby. These people are mentally ill, and acting out. I know gay people, and those I know don't have to act out like this to be accepted. We need to protest them by holding up signs saying "You Need Help". and passing out cards for mental health care services.

"
State law allows West to be fined from $50 to $500 for each charge."
How about kicking his rear out of office and jailing him as long as he remains defiant? Pathetic

Wonder if the citizens of New Paltz could/would impeach this guy? What do you do with a mayor who knowingly flauts the law and breaks his oath of office?

If I were a council member, I would not attend any meeting he presided over, I would call local police to arrest him. Period.

And the citizens of New Paltz had better ask themselves: If the mayor can break any laws he sees fit, what other laws has he broken or will he break when it suits him?

And who's paying for this guy's defense? The tax-payers?

Elected officials violate the laws in about every meeting they have and they flaunt it. This is contemptable and something should be done. But it hasnt up until now and I suspect very little will be done about it now. But eventually the little man will rebel or be put in chains.
The system of Justice in America is a farce. I have said many times before, rob a bank and get 15 years, steal a million as an elected government official and get criticized.
Ask yourself who is it that prosecutes government wrong doing and when is the last time you saw it happen? You have millions that has been spent illegally on government credit cards and in the last Administration one department couldn't even find 230 Million dollars or show where it went and it was supposed to be for education.Americans are suckers.

Well, is this guy arrogant enough to bill the city for his defense? If so, I'll bet that would tick off residents. Or is someone else paying for his defense? And if so, isn't that a gift? Residents probably wouldn't be too thrilled with that, either.

I think you are exactly right. I also wonder why all these activists babble about "civil disobedience" then fight like anything to avoid taking the consequences of their actions. If I am not mistaken, serving the penalty is an integral part of civil disobedience.... what cowards! They have the courage of their convictions only when it comes to a soundbite.
