My son complains about the food on his sub. Of course, he liked the IHOP in Groton, CT, so I don't put much stock in his food critic abilities. Before anybody jumps on me about how good IHOP is, try the one in Groton. You'd have to be drunk as a sailor not to notice how bad it is.

Food on subs. I kept hearing about how we submariners were the best fed sailors in the fleet. Consider:
Fresh milk was gone in a week to ten days.
Fresh fruit and vegetables in about a week.
Fresh eggs gone in 3-4 weeks.
On a 90-day load out the chill box (refrigerator) is turned into a freeze box. Ergo, cheese, butter and anything else that you can think of that wouldn't normally be frozen - is.
After about a month, everything a submariner eats comes from a can, except peanut butter. We end up living on PBJ and canned ravioli.
