Why didn't some form of life that was once sustained evolve into other forms of life? Doesn't this kind of kill Darwin's theory?

How do you figure?

1) We don't know if there is or was life on mars

2) If the conditions changed faster than the critters could adapt, then they'd be dead before they had the chance to adapt.
