As a female, I'll never be asked to play the role. But if I were male, I couldn't do it - not even in the church play. In fact, I wouldn't even have let my son (as a baby) play the baby Jesus in a Christmas scene.
I don't condemn those who do (and have two friends who have played the part in various productions), but I wouldn't do it.

I'm curious as to know why.

I used to attend a black church with a dance team that choreographed music very movingly. Very often, when one woman was given a "solo" (for lack of a better term), after she finished she would weep as the dance team left the front. I've sometimes felt the same way when I knew I had been used of the Lord. It's an awesome, humbling feeling, beyond our ability to express. We've stood in for the Lord, and we know we're completely unworthy to do so.

Don't feel bad ... at 6'1" and 255 lbs. with a mustache, I don't think I would/could play Mary. :)
