My wife has had some experience with COBRA, and as far as I know, it only guarantees that someone who has lost a job can maintain their insurance for a number of months by paying the entire premium from their own pocket. This is not worth much to the average worker who has no savings and finds himself in the unemployment line. This is not to say that I favor any government program to solve the problem, I think the government should be reduced to about one tenth of its current size.

Unemployment benefits have been extended time and again and I pay for that, they probably get food stamps, I pay for that, the list goes on...then I should pay for their healthcare as well? Tell 'em to go to a free clinic...every major town has one.
