It is to the Europeans’ credit that they tried peacefully to accommodate such a large indigestible clump of alien matter for over 40 years.

Putting it crudely: it's time to puke.

Britain will be the last to turn. They're so consumed with self-loathing and post-Colonial guilt you can hardly breath there.

Britain will be the last to turn.

Except possibly US.

Could be. Many British people are buying land in Western France because they like the atmosphere here - and because immigrants are not as omnipresent as in Great Britain. British friends tell me their old hometowns are no longer British anymore. What deranges them the most is that many of these people speak only Urdu or Arab, and no English at all.

"the Germans say that the veil is a political, rather than a religious, statement and is a symbol of repression"
In fact, it is a symbol of a political movement.
"It is to the Europeans’ credit that they tried peacefully to accommodate such a large indigestible clump of alien matter for over 40 years."
No, it is not. The disaster their foolishness was creating was obvious. Such mindless stupidity is never to be commended.

Millions of Americans are guilty of the same kind of dangerous folly right now. Those who support the candidacy of John Kerry or John Edwards are guilty of this. Their foolishness is deserving of condemnation. Their mindless folly and "good intentions" are not deserving of praise.

Ignoring the obvious, creating a dangerous situation, and excusing it all by "good intentions" is to no one's credit. It paves The Road to Hell.

You are absolutely correct, alas. There is little in the way of backbone on this issue in our present day British society.

To express any iota of patriotism or to the wish to have immigrants assimilate into our way of life and core values, is regarded by our Establishment as akin to a disease.

We suffer from exactly the same things reported in this article for France, Holland and Denmark. Most of our Muslim immigrants here are from Pakistan and are particularly insistent about having things adapted to their specific requirements.

Assimilation? Forget it, they have no intention. Girls are still married off to their first cousins in Pakistan so that another impoverished, uneducated, unskilled member of that tribe can gain entry and entitlement to the benefits of the UK.

The news is presently full of yet another honour killing where a daughter has rebelled against a forced marriage and paid the ultimate price. It's about time someone got a grip of it over here and got these people back in their box.

I'll go along with that, the lack of English drives me spare, I don't mind the veils so much.

I think that what deranges them most is the cost of living...then it goes downhill from there!

The unknowable question is what the people think. Really think. You'd assume there'd be great untapped smoldering resentment at the takeover of Britain. (Lord knows, I have a smoldering resentment about it, and I'm American). But opinion polls and elections don't seem to show it.

One of the most amazing political acts I've ever seen was when, before the last general election, all the candidates signed a pact that they wouldn't mention immigration. Say what? I mean, why would you need a pact unless you believed the issue would be a tremendous vote-getter for whoever brought it up. This is tantamount to saying, "here we have an issue that our people care about very much, so it would be wrong to address it."

Well, the cost of land is an added bonus, as is the medical system, but the Brits I've talked with are mainly worried about what their green and pleasant land has become.

I fear you are correct. At this point, if bin Laden denonated an atomic bomb in central London, the first reaction of the government, the chattering classes and the BBC would be a frenzied chorus of "we deserved it for our colonial sins", "the poor immigrants will be targeted in revenge by the BMP", etc.

The elites know best, don't they? The view must be much clearer from the heights of the social heap.
