Left Resorts to Absurdities to Oppose War New Castle News 2-05-04

A recent letter discussed veterans’ concerns over the war in Iraq. It’s true that many veterans are leery of war, being first-hand witnesses to its horrors. But the claim that “most vets” believe there was no good reason to go to war seems suspect.

The first two points made by vets, freeing Iraq and fighting terrorism, are supportive of the war. The dead giveaway pointing to partisans from the left are the comments about getting “oil,” “revenge” for Bush Sr. and the government not knowing what the goals are.

Most people know we don’t need Iraq’s oil. The government has spelled out the goals since the beginning, which are to remove a threat to America. The left’s denying of the evidence of Saddam’s support of terrorism and his love of dangerous weapons seems laughable at best. We are at the point where denying Saddam was a threat is as ridiculous as those who blame the President for the one cow that contracted mad cow disease (in Canada no less).

Some claim, “We supported Saddam in the 1980s!” Well, when faced with nuclear war, you use whatever allies you can. The left has forgotten that they never complained back then.

Since then, they often attested that Saddam was a threat. For example, only a few months ago General Wesley Clark testified to Congress on this threat. Now he is denying what is on public record.

These are the kind of things Democrat Senator Zell Miller was talking about when he said the left had hijacked his party. These are the things that led the Democrat (and very liberal) former New York City Mayor Ed Koch to endorse President Bush’s reelection.

The left will continue to lose elections as long as it puts absurdities and partisan politics ahead of national defense.

Critics of War Ignore Results of U.S. Victory New Castle News 6-30-03

A recent letter listed reasons why we shouldn’t trust the President. Let’s see why these reasons ignore reality:

1. Osama bin Laden wasn’t our sole target. Thousands of his followers no longer exist thanks to our president and military. What did the former president do to fight terror?

2. No one has ever denied Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Even the Democrats who want the evidence reviewed agreed it was very valid more than once. The evidence is only a problem now that an election year is coming.

3. Terrorist training camps and foreign combatants were found in Iraq.

4. Most of Iraq’s people did welcome us and the opportunity to live without fear.

5. Tax cuts have always helped the economy and far worse ones than we have now.

6. If you don’t like education reforms, blame the architect, Ted Kennedy, or the public school system that blocks change at every turn.

7. It’s funny how Democrats claim to have accomplished tons for senior medical care at the same time they claim seniors are on the verge of losing everything.

Other writers have complained Iraq hasn’t been turned into a democracy overnight. I ask, how long did it take to rebuild Europe and Japan? Some worry we moved to slow to secure weapons sites in Iraq. Where were these worries when our antiwar “allies” kept delaying the war? All that time gave Iraq ample time to hide and perhaps give weapons.

Daily, we find that Saddam’s atrocities in Iraq were worse than we thought. It has been said that in a better world, the liberation of Iraq would have been praised. I fear we have forgotten the price of freedom and it will take some World War II-level event for people to remember.
