It did so as the standard British service rifle cartridge from 1888 to 1955, soldiering on at least a decade after that here and there in British service, and continues to this day elsewhere, still seen in the hands of police and auxiliaries in Nepal, as well as being the most common weaopon in use by the other side there.
Note though that the British went through several permutations of ammunition, and similarly, you should likely consider a couple of different possible loads to increase the versatility of your Enfields. They're likely the best buy on the current market for an individual needing a good rifle.
I keep telling people, RiNO's are among the biggest enemies of RKBA. The Pew Trusts proved it with their political typology study in 1999 -- they polled them on the issues, and business-class Republicans don't like private ownership of firearms. Their guilty consciences demand disarmament. Alexander Hamilton was brilliant, but he was a skank on the subject of freedom and the People's liberties, and businessmen have all been the same way ever since. One of these days we're going to have to rip them a new one, just to prove we really meant it. But as long as they think they're all studs, they won't back off.
