You can be sure that whatever Bush did, in the aftermath (if there was an aftermath), the dainty boys would say Bush should have done the opposite. If he announced an impending asteroid hit, they'd say he unnecessarily frightened people in a situation where there was nothing anyone could do. If he failed to announce it, they'd say he denied people their "right to know."

On less than 24 hours' notice? Not much more than "Duck!". The best we could have done was wait until an accurate trajectory was calculated and then, if it happened to be headed for a populated area, tell them to run like hell. Or, if it was to land in the ocean, to evacuate coastal cities to whatever extent possible.

Which probably wouldn't be much. Basically you'd just have mass panic and gridlock.

And, of course, a 500-meter asteroid would be a hell of a lot worse than a 30-meter one.

Uh, heads up...

What's the plan for an asteroid hit?

I don't need to be told by the government what to do, or how to prepare. A heads up would do me just fine.

Probably little or nothing depending on the size. If it was huge and close, and going to hit close or in the US there is nothing they would have done but to get the gov. ready for evacuation. Wouldn't want to clog the roads with us civilians trying to get away.

If it was smaller they would have told us to go to the old bomb shelters. Oh and bring your guns and cans of bear spray because there will be looting especially in the cities.
