Cheney needs to resign next spring not this spring. That way Bush can choose his successor in a non-election state of mind. If the GOP doesn't prepare a successor to Bush for 2008 we are setting ourselves up for a hard lesson.

If the GOP doesn't prepare a successor to Bush for 2008 we are setting ourselves up for a hard lesson. What lesson would that be? You do realize that sitting vice-presidents have lost 3 out of 4 elections in the past 50 years? Maybe the lesson is that the party should turn to a fresh face, unaffiliated with the current administration.

Yeah, haven't we learned the lessons of President Humphrey, President Mondale, and President Gore? Being VP is an automatic ticket to the White House.
Replacing Cheney would be seen as a sign of panic. Let's worry about 2004 before we obsess on 2008. The Republicans will nominate someone in 2008 who will have a good chance of holding all the red states against billy jeff's wife.

I am not so sure the "successor" thing works anyway. How many times has the VP gone on to become president? How many of those after two term presidents? Does it even matter? Maybe the GOP is better off having an open field, and more to choose from, rather than getting stuck with a presumptive "successor." This isn't a kingdom. We little people DO get to choose. I think folks are interested in Bill Owens, to name one example.
