This is not good news, by any measure.
I think a bunch of the *white* Islamist terrorists are already here and will enact the "Beltway Sniper" routine in 20 or 30 major US cities. Suicide bombings in schools, malls, hospitals, house-to-house assassinations, police ambushes - there was an article on FR in '02 about these tactics; can't find it now - which detailed all kinds of murderous tactics.
Sure hope I'm wrong. It'd much easier to spot and kill the ME types than the Euro-Islamo-killers.

The new conscripts defy identification by European intelligence services because their Islamic lives are lived completely underground. There is therefore no way of finding their addresses telephone numbers. So exactly how, then, can Debka provide estimates as to their numbers?

According to French counter-intelligence, al Qaeda has recruited in France alone between 35,000 and 45,000 men
What an absolutely laughable number.
Wonder how long it will take the FReepers with their noses wedged well into the lower digestive tracts of DUMBKA to show up and bash those who make fun of them.
I very seriously doubt whether AQ has ever had more than a 1,000 actual "operatives" WORLDWIDE.

Debka or no Debka, I would argue that you vastly underestimate the numbers of Wahabbist Muslims that are ready to wage war with the west.
I would urge you to read Dore Gold's book Hatred's Kingdom". He gives a detailed history of the Wahabbist movement, the wars it has fought for more than 200 years of middle eastern history and the kind of money that has been pumped into it by the Saudis. Wahabbism is rampant in much of the middle east and the west has grossly underestimated it.
Much of the the Chechen army was influenced by the Wahabbists, as is the Muslim brotherhood, Hamas, and huge numbers of madrassas in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Taliban are born of the Wahabbists. I wish that you were correct, but the evidence is great that I am.

I'm not familiar with Debka. Sounds like they're not too credible on such issues? Yikes, that's not a very good track record. maybe if they throw enough *stuff* against the wall, some of it'll stick.
Doing some FR-searching to learn about Debka...

AQ is a misnomer and red herring.
Your view is far more accurate.
There is essentially no difference between an observing salafiwahhabmuslimbrotherhood type of individual and AQ.
The essential philosophy is identical, and this face of islam, it's totalitarian side, has used AQ type shocktroops, inspired by Ibn Tammiyah of the 7-8th century, since virtually the first days of islam.
It's the face we need to ruthlessly smash.

My take is that the recruitment numbers may be exaggerated, but essentially this drive, running for a long time, prior to 9.11 has culminated in some serious threat issues.
Thus this info being put out there.
We don't know who the nutty blue eyed jihadis are.

AQ is the modern Wahabbist movement. Bin Ladin is considered the successor to Wahab. It is not a red herring, it is the logical extension of Wahabbist murder and brutality. It is only that we in the west misunderstand what is going on.

We'll see who's laughing when those Chinese infantry units in Afghanistan, Africa, and Idaho(!) make their presence felt.
If it's hugh and series, Debka can be counted on to report it when others won't. = )

That's what I meant by red herring. SHould've clarified that.
It's a Saudi created herring designed to distract us from the aims, goals and aspirations of the Saudi State.
Successful too, witness the reticence to publicly finger the Saudis.
Sophisticated enough to take advantage of certain blindspots regarding the Saudis on our part; economic, sociological, historical.

There is an ongoing effort to distract the people of the west from the Wahabbists in the country who have such violent power. Red Herrings with out end.
