NOW is the time that marriage must be legally, and constitutionally protected. NOT last May

So many people are so ignorant of what it takes to win political battles. There is nothing dumber than getting out in front of an issue and getting defeated. It has destroyed many political careers.

Fools fail to understand that this is a nation with a government of the people, by the people and for the people. Any political public servant (this nation will not tolerate leaders) who gets ahead of the public will be destroyed.

In the United States a president to be successful first must determine what the public wants most, and then give it to them.

Tons of FR people long for a dictator.. You know what a dictator is, don't you? A dictator is someone who could care less what the voters want, and only does what he thinks is right. I used to not understand how Germany om 1933, then the most educated nation on earth, could vote in a Hitler. But many posters on FR show me why. They long for a principled leader that will not wait for the public and instead will act on their desires. That is how Germany got Hitler. And with the state of the economy in Germany today, I would not be surprised to see them do it again.

Thank goodness this nation has never had a principled leader who does what he wants. Every President so far has done what a majority of the voters wants or he has been defeated or removed.

So here is how it works. First the voters express what they want... then the president and congress do what the voters want.

There are two majorities that can rule. One extends from the left to just right of the political center. That is one Bill Clinton played to. The other extends from the right to just left of center.. That is the one President Bush plays to.

Until the President can measure a majority for any cause, he dare not act. You see presidents are truly public servants. Whenever one gets to thinking he is in control we get rid of him... Ask Jimmy Carter how that works.

EXCELLENT point. And that is exactly what the fringers here on FR would like to have happen.

They would like to get rid of President Bush and replace him with what??? The tooth fairy?? I think for most of them, their motives are clear, but the only viable conclusion if their wishes were granted would be a John Kerry presidency.

I, for one, thank God for this servant of His, who is also a servant of the American people.

A dictator is "one ruling absolutely and often oppressively" (Merriam Online) - not someone who merely does what he/she thinks is right. In the US, we expect our politicians to work within the bounds of the Constitution; so long as their actions are consistent with that document they're certainly not a dictator. Foolish politician, perhaps.

You're an intelligent poster - I'm surprised you'd make such an off-the-wall claim as this. Indeed, your thinly-veiled comparison between FreeRepublic posters and Hitler supporters is beyond the pale.

Thank goodness this nation has never had a principled leader who does what he wants. Every President so far has done what a majority of the voters wants or he has been defeated or removed.

While that's certainly the mechanism in play when we put politicians up for reelection every 2, 4 or 6 years (and rightly so), I find it odd that you'd "thank goodness" we've never had a principled leader. Are you suggesting that principled leadership and electoral appeal are mutually exclusive? If so, I'd beg to differ.

I completely agree with that statement.

Let the blow fall, I await its coming.
