Seems to me that possibly Russia had its "largest military exercise in 25 years" not only for Putin's benefit, but to remind us that they will quickly respond if we were to be hit and retaliate against them. Some of the wording they used at the time of the exercise seemed to suggest that they were concerned that we might abruptly attack them. It was interesting wording, all things considered. Now, why would we even consider attacking them?

That's either 1) Probable posturing for effect on the rest of the world and/or for the internal political effect within Russia.
2) Possibly laying out a strategic floor plan for their own preemptive strike...justification etc...given they might just know the source of the 2 megaton grapefruits supposedly positioned for a glow in the dark bocci tournament...and they know we will know rapidly after one is detonated where it originated.
