I suspect that the pod is the air pocket that he is creating as the weighted belt pulls him down, so tho it looks like he is rising, he is actually descending towards the bottom.

Would say that the 2 gray lines at the top right, will be the gas or oil lines that are his goal. But they could also be electric or phone cables.
