ARMED criminals in Port Moresby have murdered a father who tried to prevent them from pack-raping his wife and daughters.
The home invasion took place early yesterday morning in one of the PNG capital's squatters' settlements, The National newspaper reported.
The murdered man's wife and two teenage daughters watched in horror as more than 10 bandits shot their father and chopped up his body with an axe.
The three women were then dragged outside and pack-raped.
The dead man's wife said the criminals then placed her husband's body in their bed and set fire to the house.
The wife received cuts to her face and head, while the daughters were admitted to hospital with more serious injuries.
A third daughter, who was hiding in the house, escaped unhurt.
The mother told reporters that at 4.30am the bandits started smashing the walls of their home with axes and machetes.
She said her husband tried to defend the women but the bandits shot him and cut him in the neck with an axe.
"They decided to kill my husband when he tried to prevent them from taking us," she told the newspaper.
"I refused to go outside, so I fell on the floor every time they tried to lift me. They cut me on the head and face until I could not stand the pain," she said.
The wife believed she and her daughters would also have been murdered if not for a motorist who stopped after seeing the house ablaze.
She said the bandits mistook the motorist for the police and fled.
One of the attackers had been living with the family for the past four years, she said.
A neighbour said the criminals had first attacked his house, but he had slipped his family to safety through a trapdoor.

Another example of why not to "sex up" the title of the article.

HEAVWEIGHT rocker Meat Loaf has issued a special invitation to major fan Mark Latham to see his Sydney show tonight after the Federal Opposition Leader said he would rather remember "loaf in his heyday".
Meatloaf: performing with the MSO
Latham has suggested Meat Loaf, at 56, is past his use-by date, even though the eccentric rocker has sold out his Australian tour with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
The politician, who nominates Bat Out Of Hell as his favourite album, said in December he was reluctant to watch his hero in action.

Well, it probably would have taken ten pages to list each on individually.
New Guinea has more cultures and completely different languages packed into one area than anywhere on earth.
For the people still following their original religion, the folks in the next little valley over probably have totally different animist beliefs. Hundreds of different "indigenous" religions.

indigenous beliefs (WTF?) 34% Headhunters and animal worshippers, but some more sophisticated local religions as well. What is really meant by the term is whatever religion the people had before the Europeans (or Arabs in the case of Islam) came.

PNG is, like Australia, a British protectorate and its gun control laws are, by design, a mirror image of those in Australia. I'm sure the Aussies would take issue with the notion of them being a Brit protectorte.
However both PNG and Australia (and New Zealand) are part of the British Commonwealth, and are constitutional monarchies, with the monarch being the King or Queen of England. PNG was a protectorate of Australia until 1975.
