NEW YORK (AP) -- Andy Rooney set the phone and e-mail lines at CBS buzzing over his commentary -- in which he said God was speaking through him -- calling Mel Gibson and the Rev. Pat Robertson "wackos."

CBS said Monday it received its heaviest audience response to a "60 Minutes" report since Rooney's commentaries on the Iraq war last spring.

To put both Pat Robertson and Mel Gibson in this statement together says alot. They are not involved with each other. Rooney is reaching .. and I for one would not want to be Andy..now OR later.

Andy Rooney is an avowed atheist. I saw and heard him say so in a television interview regarding his most recent book. I think that is why CBS chose him so many years ago to share his philosophy of life with the rest of us each week.

Rooney said God had spoken to him, saying, "I wish you'd tell your viewers that both Pat Robertson and Mel Gibson strike me as wackos."

This is supposed to be humorous, after all Old Democrats haven't had alot to be cheerful about over the past decade, but this isn't funny. I would suspect this wasn't even meant to be funny, it was just masked in that for plausible deniablity, but its so over the top that even as sarcasm it comes out wrong.

This is just petty, bitter, and mean spirited.
